Joe South, American astronaut, has been on month-long mission to test a new faster than light ship.  When he emerges into normal space his A.I. co-pilot informs him the star / planet configurations say it's 500 years in his future.  He has memories of having visited aa strange planet with soulful eyed aliens, and politics on the space station, Threshold, are dangerous and bewildering.
